It was’t until I was about 20 that I came to the soul party having spent my teenage years head banging to rock and nodding profoundly to prog, amongst other things. Still love some of that, and many other genres of music, but mainly my heart and feet are firmly in the soul dance room, particularly of the Northern variety.

As a teenager I was forever copying album covers so when I started doing my record portraits 18 odd years ago it felt a bit like going home. They serve as an ongoing celebration of vinyl as well as unabashed nostalgia for halcyon days.

The Motown series has, unsurprisingly, been very popular. The resonance of this particularly beautiful and searching song sadly points to the fact that things have not got any better. “ Don’t punish me with brutality. Talk to me, so you can see, oh what’s going on.. “
